THE STORY
My art is inspired by the ocean and made for the ocean. Each piece in the collection has been designed on CAD software 3D printed using fully recycled filament. This material is derived from recycled PET bottles, making use of wasted plastic and turning it into something functional and beautiful.
Once collected, the bottles are shredded and melted down into pellets. They are then converted into long colourful strands of filament for digital design and printing. 3D printing is a great medium to create both functional and aesthetic models whilst giving plastic bottles a new purpose and keeping them out of waterways. This method of manufacturing is very versatile, and allows complex geometries to be created.
Australia has a poor record when it comes to plastic recycling, with only 12% of plastic being recycled each year. The average Australian uses 130kg of plastic per year, with most going into landfill and some making its way into the oceans. Plastic pollution is a huge issue as it can take hundreds of years to decompose. By promoting recycling, we can reduce the amount of plastic in the oceans.
10% of all ocean vase sales is donated to Surfrider Foundation Australia, a not for profit organisation dedicated to the protection of Australia’s beaches.
